Public transport needs must be carefully planned to maximise passenger numbers, but minimise space taken in the public realm, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>redesign our streets for the uses we predict for the future.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As we plan to reconfigure our urban realm, where should we start? Should it by thinking of pedestrians? Cyclists? Residents? Businesses? If our town and cities are to be truly resilient and sustainable places for all users, we must give a higher priority than we have done historically to green infrastructure \u2013 our <strong>parks, gardens, trees and other elements of planting.<\/strong> Too often other elements in our urban landscape have been viewed as of greater importance and thus we have areas which are unpliant, unhealthy and unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 WillNorman<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities and municipalities often say that they have no funds to maintain green infrastructure, but when we look at the multiple and enormous benefits that accrue from healthy planting, and trees in particular, it is clear that these benefits more than cover any small maintenance liabilities, but unfortunately, these benefits do not usually fill the local authority\/municipalities coffers. Benefits such as <strong>health and well being increases<\/strong>, <strong>reduced stormwater issues<\/strong> and less road traffic collisions bring real savings; these need to be redeployed to make the maintenance net zero in cost.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, they&#8217;ve announced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/2-billion-package-to-create-new-era-for-cycling-and-walking\">\u00a32 billion\u00a0government package<\/a>\u00a0 to increase cycling and walking, we will start to see\u00a0 pop-up bike lanes with protected space for cycling, wider pavements, safer junctions, and cycle and bus-only corridors in England within weeks.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/corporate\/about-tfl\/how-we-work\/planning-for-the-future\/encouraging-cycling-and-walking\">TfL<\/a> have released a new Planning for Walking Toolkit which provides tools to support the development of public realm design briefs in London, with important considerations for green infrastructure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11449\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11449\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36888\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Archway-Gyratory-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Archway-Gyratory-01.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Archway-Gyratory-01-600x375.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Archway-Gyratory-01-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Archway-Gyratory-01-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Archway-Gyratory-01-960x600.jpg 960w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Archway-Gyratory-01-640x400.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TfL&#8217;s Redevelopment of Archway Gyratory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>GreenBlue Urban<\/strong> have proven many times that properly planted trees and plants can enhance the life experiences of everyone who lives, works and plays in urban areas.
