Indeed, our whole protocol is to ensure that the soil under paved surface around trees is not compromised through excessive compaction. At this conference, we heard a variety of approaches addressing the key subtopics of: Natural Environment, Landscape, Engineered Solutions, Collaboration and The Way Forward.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30429\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ArborFlow-Webpage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"766\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ArborFlow-Webpage.jpg 766w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ArborFlow-Webpage-600x374.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ArborFlow-Webpage-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Delegates were given an insight into the implications of pollution and nitrogen on mycorrhizas from <strong>Dr Martin Bitardtando<\/strong> and the final presentation of day one, given by <strong>Richard Smith<\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/environment-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environment Agency<\/a>, highlighted that critical relationship between soil compaction and water management. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The more we are compacting our soils, the less able we are to mitigate against flood risk in both rural and urban settings.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Day two focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/resource-centre\/tree-species-selection-for-green-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">species selection<\/a>, soil specification and engineered systems. <strong>Dr Andy Hirons<\/strong>, <strong>Simon Toomer<\/strong> and <strong>Professor Andreas Roloff<\/strong>, provided their own unique perspectives on species selection for the built environment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8437\" style=\"width: 756px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30307 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tree-species-selection-guide-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"756\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tree-species-selection-guide-2.jpg 756w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tree-species-selection-guide-2-600x394.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/tree-species-selection-guide-2-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A valuable wealth of information for tree selection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Working with historic cities in the UK and abroad, it was fascinating to hear from Simon on the relationship between species selection and the \u2018sense of place,\u2019 particular to our historic cityscapes. Having experienced working with Bruges for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interreg2seas.eu\/en\/wrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WRC Interreg European project<\/a>, we are acutely aware of the need to marry intelligent species selection with the correct root directors, barriers and support systems to ensure that design and vision is not limited in these unique and historic settings.<\/p>\n<p>It was of course, excellent to have an overview from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timohare-associates.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim O\u2019Hare<\/a> with whom we have worked on several occasions. Both Tim O\u2019 Hare associates and GreenBlue Urban were privileged to be involved in the development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/case-study\/queen-elizabeth-olympic-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olympic Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8698\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8698\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30625 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Olympic-Park-Modal-Shift-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Olympic-Park-Modal-Shift-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Olympic-Park-Modal-Shift-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Olympic-Park-Modal-Shift-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Olympic-Park-Modal-Shift-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Olympic-Park-Modal-Shift-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Olympic-Park-Modal-Shift.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Over 10,000 irrigation, aeration and guying units used at the Olympic Park.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the afternoon, we heard about below ground engineered systems \u2013 a topic directly pertinent to us.<strong> Keith Sacre<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcham.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barchams<\/a> began the proceedings with a presentation developed in conjunction with<strong> Anne Jalzulot<\/strong> and <strong>Sue James<\/strong>. It was heartening to see Keith utilise examples of well-established schemes delivered by GreenBlue and we wholeheartedly support his message that following specification and installation correctly is critical to the long-term success of the tree.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8674\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30573 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P1020191-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P1020191-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P1020191-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P1020191-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P1020191-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P1020191-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P1020191.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Urban Realm Development at Selfridges, London<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Nelda Matheny\u2019s<\/strong> presentation, highlighting the challenges and complexities of determining the cause of tree failure when several premixed soils are used on a development site, was resonant. She made no apologies for the fact that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>structural soils do not provide the solution to long term tree health.<\/strong><\/span> Her evidence base was robust, and she explained that research on the structural soils is still being used in certain countries whose climate, water tables and projected shifts in temperature due to climate change, is outdated and incorrectly applied. We couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bjorn Embren<\/strong> was then afforded the opportunity to present his latest iteration of the Stockholm mix. Again, this structural soil solution is of limited and highly localised application. Whilst it is undoubtedly the case that Bjorn\u2019s focus on porosity is crucial, it is not clear that this latest iteration will be able to deliver on its promise. He provided some images of installations in highways schemes, but it was obvious that for high-quality SUDs and transport infrastructure schemes that can withstand the test of time, an engineered solution would be most appropriate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8750\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8750\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30680 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9040-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9040-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9040-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9040-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9040-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9040-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_9040.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Peters Square, Manchester, Septemeber 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For more on this topic please see our detailed publication: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/resource-centre\/soil-cells-vs-structural-soil-analyzing-soil-pavement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Structural Soil vs Soil Cells.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy Batenburg<\/strong> presented the Amsterdam perspective, again using specifically local case studies to make the claim that structural soils have a load bearing capacity for infrastructure projects. Wendy herself highlighted the plethora of risk factors associated with the use and installation of schemes using the Amsterdam structural soil mix. Too wet and you can\u2019t compact it she says. Therein lies the problem\u2026 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>good soil shouldn\u2019t be compacted.<\/strong><\/span> She admitted that for years, the results of using this method in the Netherlands has been disappointing. We would concur. Whilst people might think structural soils are easier to use and specify than engineered systems, this couldn\u2019t be further from the truth.<\/p>\n<p>On the final day there was a clear drive to plan for the future. <strong>Mark Roberts<\/strong> did well to remind us that over 60 per cent of the world\u2019s population will be living in cities by 2030.
