Webinar: Simplifying SuDS for all

With Levelling up high on the government’s agenda, nature-based solutions are critical in tackling the ongoing implications of climate change and the effects of flooding in our towns and cities.

GBUs mission is to be the interface between nature and the built environment, by doing so designing for BLUE should at the core of your drainage design strategy, adding value to developments, floodproofing properties, maximising biodiversity, providing equal access to blue and green infrastructure with multi-functional benefits – Anyone anywhere can have a SuDS feature.

GreenBlue Urban are best placed to educate on MicroSuDS, our session will incorporate a diverse mix of drainage design advocates detailing schemes that are currently in design and construction.

Collaboration as always is key, our mix of speakers will showcase how Green & Blue is possible from the outset and not a mere after thought….

With nearly 40 years of experience planting trees in urban settings, Howard carries out CPD presentations and site visits to assist contractors, Planners and Architects with their tree planting projects.

Hannah Purkis

Flood & Water Engineer, Suffolk County Council

Session title: TBC

Hannah is a flood and water officer working for the Lead Local Flood Authority at Suffolk County Council and is responsible for reviewing SuDS designs for major developments in Suffolk and national strategic infrastructure projects along with smaller schemes which are located in areas of flood risk. She also has experience working in the private sector at an engineering consultancy producing SuDS compliant surface water drainage systems. Hannah is currently updating the Suffolk SuDS Guidance and is particularly interested in the ability of SuDS schemes to provide both amenity and biodiversity alongside management of water quality and quantity.

Hen Abbott

Principal Highway Development Coordinator, Gloucestershire County Counci

Session title: We’d love to have SuDS but….. 

Hen is an experienced highway engineer currently working with highway adoptions for  Gloucestershire County Council. She has previously worked in the highways maintenance sector managing routine maintenance and bespoke remedial designs.  

Hen has a strong interest in SuDS and the benefits they bring to highway schemes, with a clear understanding of the challenges facing local authorities in delivering high-quality SuDS on new developments.

John Brewington

Director, Verdant Fields

Session title: Can a town wide SuDS retrofit programme be simple? 

John has over 20 years’ experience of delivering innovative solutions and environmental improvements in the water sector. He previously led the Smart Networks Innovation team at Severn Trent and managed the Environment Agency’s Midlands Urban River Community Initiative. 

Through his consultancy Verdant Fields, John is now helping Severn Trent design and deliver the £85 million Mansfield sustainable flood resilience programme. As part of the combined Severn Trent and consultancy delivery team, John is leading on innovation, monitoring and assurance. 

John also works as a Regional Development Manager at the Rivers Trust where he helps to build capacity and capability across the movement.

Chryse Tinsley

Landscape Planner, Leicester City Council

Session title: How to encourage better SuDS in all schemes; recognising the challenges 

Chryse trained in architecture, landscape architecture and environmental management.  She was the national SuDS champion for 2018/2019.  Working for Leicester City Council in the planning department provides lots of opportunities to work with developers on achieving better external environments.  She also designs and runs contracts such as a series of wetlands as part of natural flood management.  In contrast to this she works alongside highway colleagues on city centre projects.  She has pioneered SuDS within the city; encouraging developers and the city centre professionals to use SuDS.  She takes every opportunity to promote the work that she does for the city.
