It\u00a0highlighted the mainstreaming of green infrastructure and Low Impact Development (LID) in municipal planning and policy making, as well as new and existing work and research in the United States and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the EWRI Urban Water Resources Research Council (a division of the\u00a0American Society of Civil Engineers), the\u00a0conference provides\u00a0an international forum to present the latest technologies\u00a0and case studies related to low impact development\u00a0and green infrastructure available to the industry &#8211; including\u00a0new and continuing research, developments, and community adoption of LID throughout the United States and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Internationally recognized sustainability experts from every aspect of the industry came together to discuss the latest\u00a0development of LID and green infrastructure principles and technologies. The rising challenge of sustainable stormwater management and how it can be made achievable for all cities was of top priority.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Low Impact Development\u00a0is\u00a0a design methodology that responds to the increasing drainage challenges brought on by urbanization.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a key sponsor of the event, and a major solutions provider in the LID industry,\u00a0GreenBlue Urban attended the conference to contribute to the worthy cause and\u00a0share our expertise on the topic. GreenBlue consultants took part in several of the educational sessions &#8211; most notably &#8220;LID Performance and Research in Cold Regions&#8221; and &#8220;Tools for Green Infrastructure Planning &amp; Design&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3923\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-LID-Conference-Portland-ME-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"2016-lid-conference-portland-me\" width=\"574\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-LID-Conference-Portland-ME-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-LID-Conference-Portland-ME-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-LID-Conference-Portland-ME-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-LID-Conference-Portland-ME.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Why is LID\u00a0so important?<\/h3>\n<p>Drainage issues\u00a0arising from increased\u00a0levels of urbanization throughout much of the world has exacerbated the limitations of conventional surface-water drainage measures, which were\u00a0designed to transfer stormwater\u00a0from where it lands\u00a0to a soak-away or a watercourse as quickly\u00a0as possible. This method increases the risks of flooding, environmental damage, and urban diffuse pollution; since rainwater runoff usually carries contaminants including oils, heavy metals, pesticides, fertilizers, chemicals and other urban matter. Low Impact Development (or <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/urban-drainage-stormwater-management-terminology-lid-suds-wsud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">otherwise referred to as SUDS or WSUD<\/a>)\u00a0represents a design methodology that responds to these increasing drainage challenges.<\/p>\n<h3>How can street trees play a role?<\/h3>\n<p>GreenBlue also showcased our world-renowned\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/products\/arbowflow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArborFlow system<\/a>\u00a0at the conference. ArborFlow\u00a0sustainably manages stormwater by integrating urban runoff mitigation into tree pit design to help keep\u00a0stormwater onsite while irrigating the trees at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/products\/arbowflow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3920\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ArborFlow-Hardscape-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"arborflow-hardscape\" width=\"567\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ArborFlow-Hardscape-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ArborFlow-Hardscape.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-section\">\n<div class=\"blog-post-wrapper cell-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"section post-body\">\n<p>Integrating stormwater management into urban tree pit design is arguably the most sustainable stormwater mitigation option available. The benefits there are to turn runoff from a hinderance to an opportunity are endless. Urban drainage tree pit systems, such as the GreenBlue ArborFlow, have been developed as an environmentally robust, yet effective, means of managing stormwater runoff. It significantly reduces the velocity and flow rate of surface water runoff in paved\u00a0areas and contributes towards meeting the required discharge rates. ArborFlow also filters out harmful pollutants using a special species of reed (available in the 4-stage system) that collects, processes and breaks down any pollutants and contaminants carried in runoff. The system prevents particles in the water from passing through into the trees rooting area, or clogging up the troughs.<\/p>\n<p>ArborFlow\u2019s design allows the water to be discharged into surrounding subsoil to be absorbed by the trees\u2019 root system, or to find its way into the specially designed flow-control chamber positioned on the outfall of the tree pit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2016 International Low Impact Development Conference took place in beautiful Portland, Maine.
