And as the Fairfax County residents on Stevenson Avenue faced, the prospect of a 15 foot brick wall immediately across the street from their front door wasn&#8217;t something\u00a0they were particularly pleased with. But, with a little ingenuity\u00a0and the right system, the architects\u00a0of this project were able to turn the construction of a potentially controversial sound barrier along a major highway into a\u00a0functional, aesthetically pleasing\u00a0design statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-section\">\n<div class=\"blog-post-wrapper cell-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"section post-body\">\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18191 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post4.jpg\" alt=\"I-95-post4\" width=\"330\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post4.jpg 330w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post4-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Interstate-95 is the main highway on the east coast of the United States, running north-south from\u00a0the Canadian border to the south of Florida. It is one of the busiest highways in the USA servicing up\u00a0to 500,000 vehicles per day. But along with those highway commuters comes noise \u2013 and a lot of it.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the Virginia State Department of Transportation\u00a0erected a new sound barrier wall to\u00a0mitigate the noise generated in the suburban\u00a0areas from the I-95 (I-395) that passes through\u00a0the cities of Alexandria and Springfield in Fairfax\u00a0County, Virginia. Along with the sound barrier, was the\u00a0proposal of approximately 50 new tree plantings\u00a0to line the residential street of Stevenson\u00a0Avenue, which runs parallel to the interstate.\u00a0This provided an excellent opportunity to soften\u00a0the visual impact of the barrier.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18188 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post3.jpg\" alt=\"I-95-post3\" width=\"330\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post3.jpg 330w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post3-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe client wanted a structural planting area to\u00a0provide a growing zone for the trees that were\u00a0going to be planted right next to the sound barrier,\u201d\u00a0explained the GreenBlue consultant that\u00a0oversaw the project. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/type\/soil-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">StrataCells\u00ae<\/a> were used to\u00a0support the integrity of the planting zone and\u00a0prevent settlement of the surrounding areas\u00a0into the planting zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18185 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post2.jpg\" alt=\"I-95-post2\" width=\"330\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post2.jpg 330w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/I-95-post2-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Root management was also a concern. For engineering\u00a0reasons, the client wanted to prevent\u00a0the tree roots from encroaching into the reinforcing\u00a0areas of the sound barrier. Therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/products\/rootstop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RootStop<\/a> root barriers were incorporated around\u00a0the planting zone to ensure roots were kept in\u00a0the designated StrataCell\u00ae rooting space and\u00a0away from the structural reinforcing areas of the\u00a0barrier.<\/p>\n<p>GreenBlue supported in the design and installation\u00a0of the project, and worked onsite with RSG\u00a0Landscaping, the landscape contractor, to provide\u00a0installation accreditation and ensure the\u00a0correct utilization of the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/type\/urban-tree-planting-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ArborSystem\u00ae<\/a> components.\u00a0\u201cThe installation went well and the engineer\u00a0and contractor had a good understanding\u00a0of the benefits that ArborSystem\u00ae provides,\u201d\u00a0the GreenBlue project consultant explained.
