To have a chance\u00a0of success, tree species and location are the first priority in our goal of establishing trees in cities. Planting potentially large trees in wrong locations\u00a0is counterproductive and will simply turn people against trees. However, equally often we see tree planting sites which could support larger species, populated with smaller \u2018whitebeam\u2019 or \u2018prunus\u2019 species which really represent a lost opportunity. Big trees bring big benefits but they must be located wisely.<\/p>\n<h3>Right Tree, Right Place<\/h3>\n<p>Trees need space, they need <a href=\"\/gb?post_format=soil-cells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">soil volume<\/a> \u2013 there is a direct correlation between what we provide the tree with to grow below ground and with the result we will see above ground.<\/p>\n<p>Architects and engineers would never seriously consider building a structure with inadequate foundations and yet many will routinely plant trees on their plans in tiny tree pits just a fraction of what they really need to do well.<\/p>\n<p>Where possible, plant trees in groups with shared soil space. Trees can then spread out happily between themselves and benefit from additional soil volume. One common method is the use of continuous trench planting or shared tree pits. These can be\u00a0used as part of traffic calming projects\u00a0(thus fulfilling two roles in one), or simply\u00a0parking delineation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18440 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_2696-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2696\" width=\"470\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_2696-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_2696-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_2696-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_2696-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_2696-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_2696.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><em>A &#8220;bump out&#8221; with a newly planted tree in a road reconstruction<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Verges<\/strong> \u2013 The\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link oneClick-available\">narrow<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link oneClick-available\">strip<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link\">of<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link oneClick-available\">turf<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link oneClick-available\">bordering<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link\">on<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link\">a<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oneClick-link oneClick-available\">sidewalk or\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"oneClick-link oneClick-available\">roadway is\u00a0<\/span>the most common area for\u00a0urban tree location.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pavement<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Demanding on the tree but <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.greenblue.com\/suspended-pavement-for-urban-tree-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suspended pavement applications<\/a> can be achieved successfully with appropriate <a href=\"\/gb?post_format=urban-tree-planting-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tree planting systems<\/a> and careful\u00a0attention to tree pit design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parking lots<\/strong> \u2013 Again a potentially hostile\u00a0place to plant a tree without proper consideration, but greatly beneficial\u00a0in providing cool shade for vehicles in\u00a0bright weather.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18323 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/5B-low-res-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"5B - low res\" width=\"347\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/5B-low-res-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/5B-low-res-600x696.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/5B-low-res.jpg 662w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><em>Successful tree planting in parking lots, with no reduction in parking space\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plazas<\/strong> \u2013 These are where trees can\u00a0really have huge aesthetic and beneficial\u00a0impact \u2013 there is nothing else that can be\u00a0incorporated in these kind of spaces that\u00a0will confer the same degree of benefit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parks<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Few things can compete\u00a0with established trees in a park setting \u2013\u00a0indeed try imagining a park without trees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urban forest pockets<\/strong> \u2013 Creating tree\u00a0clusters in urban spaces and pocket\u00a0parks is an excellent strategy to increase\u00a0tree canopy for climate mitigation and\u00a0adaptation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUDS\u00a0(<\/strong><strong>sustainable urban drainage systems)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Consider the use of trees as part\u00a0of a stormwater retention strategy \u2013 <a href=\"\/gb?post_format=stormwater-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SUDS tree pit designs<\/a> are becoming an increasingly successful urban drainage method.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clearly, we cannot just simply drop trees in anywhere.
