{"id":46261,"date":"2020-08-27T13:31:58","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T12:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/?p=46261"},"modified":"2020-08-27T14:38:58","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T13:38:58","slug":"celebrating-southwarks-urban-forest-assets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/gb\/celebrating-southwarks-urban-forest-assets\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Southwark&#8217;s Urban Forest Assets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent inventory of the trees in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwark.gov.uk\/allservices\"><strong>London Borough of Southwark<\/strong><\/a> as managed by the tree officers has revealed an estimated economic value of the urban forest at an outstanding \u00a3165 million.<\/p>\n<p>Tree officers are often recognised as \u2018custodians of the urban forest\u2019, managing the public tree estate for the common good.<\/p>\n<p>The study, using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itreetools.org\/tools\/i-tree-eco\"><strong>i-Tree Eco<\/strong><\/a>, carried out by our good friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treeconomics.co.uk\/\">Treeconomics<\/a>, discovered that the trees owned and managed by the London borough stated that the figure quoted would be the cost to replace all of the established urban trees.<\/p>\n<p>The valuable tool was also able to calculate that the trees managed by the council contribute to the removal of over <strong>21 tonnes of air-borne pollutants<\/strong>, valued at \u00a3135,000 plus each year, and store over <strong>57,000 tonnes of carbon<\/strong>, valued at over \u00a314 million per year. However, the benefits linked to health and well-being cannot currently be measured using i-Tree; so the annual benefits figure of almost \u00a3400,000 is certainly an underestimation.<\/p>\n<p>By valuing the benefits that its trees are providing, Southwark Council now has an <strong>evidence base<\/strong> with which to mitigate for <strong>development impacts<\/strong>, inform land-use changes and, through planned intervention, avoid losses to its natural capital. As a follow up to the i-Tree Eco inventory project, Southwark commissioned <strong>Treeconomics<\/strong> to create a Tree Planting Opportunity Map, highlighting all areas with tree planting potential throughout the borough. The mapping exercise showed that if, over time, all actual plantable space were to become tree-covered, Southwark&#8217;s canopy cover could increase from <strong>19.9% to 34.9%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cllr Rebecca Lury, Cabinet Member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIn Southwark, we are committed to nurturing our existing 82,000 trees, and planting more. As an inner London borough, we value the vital role that our trees play in helping to improve air quality, as well the other multiple benefits they offer to local communities and neighbourhoods.
