{"id":72560,"date":"2022-02-24T08:42:22","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T08:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/?p=72560"},"modified":"2024-03-05T09:54:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T09:54:56","slug":"effective-community-engagement-with-suds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/gb\/effective-community-engagement-with-suds\/","title":{"rendered":"Effective Community Engagement with SuDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Community engagement plays a crucial role in enabling nature-based solutions to tackle the ongoing implications of climate change and the effects of flooding in our towns and cities.<\/p>\n<p>GBU\u2019s mission is to be the interface between nature and the built environment, by doing so a collaborative approach is possible to enable the successful planning, design, and implementation of blue-green infrastructure solutions to benefit all. Recent revisions to planning policy and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/national-planning-policy-framework--2\"><strong>National Planning Policy Framework<\/strong> <\/a>recognise the role that well-designed SuDS have in managing surface water.<\/p>\n<h3>Why SuDS?<\/h3>\n<p>Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are designed to manage stormwater locally (as close to its source as possible), mimic natural drainage and encourage its infiltration, attenuation, evapotranspiration, and passive treatment. SuDS are designed to both manage the flood and pollution risks resulting from urban runoff and to contribute wherever possible to environmental enhancement and placemaking. The successful design will incorporate local policy and will be developed by the local planning authority, often with engineers, highways, and specialist landscape architects, all taking into consideration any local flood risk strategy guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Early engagement (pre-application) with stakeholders is always recommended, including the local community. Proposals of multifunctional spaces should include all communal spaces; verges, gardens, landscaped areas, play and car parks. Plans should highlight the benefits of nature-based solutions and the cost benefits versus engineered storage alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Successful schemes <strong>listen and develop<\/strong> plans based on collaborative feedback from their users, a perfect example of this is one of our most successful case studies at <a href=\"\/gb?p=37442\"><strong>North Street,<\/strong> <strong>Keighley<\/strong><\/a> in West Yorkshire. Design consultations with the Local Town Council included DDA groups and even footage from local pub users, whereby it was decided the railings would be included in the final design!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72636\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72636\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72636 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Keighley-North-Street.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Keighley-North-Street.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Keighley-North-Street-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Keighley-North-Street-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Keighley-North-Street-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Keighley-North-Street-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Keighley-North-Street-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">North Street Keighley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The final design of the <a href=\"\/gb?p=35081\"><strong>ArborFlow tree pits<\/strong><\/a> has been a resounding success with <strong>Bradford Metropolitan Council<\/strong> highly praised for their continued efforts relating to stormwater management.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Calculations: The SuDs tree pits were designed to accept highway water runoff resulting from the creation of an additional 356sq.m of new carriageway coping with a rainfall intensity assumed to be 50mm\/hr; peak runoff rate was determined to be 4.95 l\/s.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SuDS can be embedded into the curriculum to provide an educational resource and an engaging landscaped area for play. A perfect example of this is <a href=\"\/gb?p=48787\"><strong>All Saints School<\/strong><\/a> in Newmarket where <strong>Anglian Water<\/strong> collaborated with <strong>Atkins<\/strong>, <strong>West Suffolk Council<\/strong> and <strong>Newmarket Town Council<\/strong>\u2014to engage with residents, students and teachers to educate on the effects of climate change.\u00a0 The final design incorporated fun and practical SuDS solutions to cope with a 30-year return storm event and divert water from the foul sewer.
