The beautiful environs of <strong>St Catharine\u2019s College<\/strong>, Cambridge, where GreenBlue have delivered the <strong>ArborSystem<\/strong>, provided the perfect context to welcome landscape architects, utilities companies and developers to a focused series of talks on <strong>Trees and SUDs<\/strong> in the urban environment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9923\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9923\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31782 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-01-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"st catharines cambridge trees\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-01-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-01-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-01-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-01-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-01-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-01.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CEO Dean Bowie gives a tour of the St Catharines College tree planting scheme.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speakers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.gov.uk\/\">Cambridge City Council<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lda-design.co.uk\/\">LDA Design<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sharonhosegoodassociates.co.uk\/\">Sharon Hosegood Associates<\/a> and <strong>GreenBlue Urban<\/strong> highlighted the challenges and solutions for delivery from policy through to valuation techniques and underground soil cell systems.<\/p>\n<p>The Cambridge City Council officers made the explicit connection between the<strong> tree strategy<\/strong> they utilise to protect and <strong>enhance canopy cover<\/strong> with the important function trees play as bioretention systems within <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/na\/product-category\/stormwater-management\/\">sustainable urban drainage schemes.<\/a> Sharon Hosegood provided worked examples of the <strong>CAVAT valuation model<\/strong> that she uses when working with local authorities and developers to ensure that canopy cover is not compromised through the removal of highly valued urban trees. <strong>Dawn Purves<\/strong> of LDA Design (formerly Robert Myers Associates) gave a fascinating insight into the rationale behind her specification of the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/na\/product-category\/soil-cells\/\">RootSpace soil cell system<\/a> in the constrained hard landscape around Cambridge city rail station.<\/p>\n<p>GreenBlue Urban\u2019s very own CEO <strong>Dean Bowie<\/strong> focused on the urban tree as a missed opportunity in sustainable urban drainage schemes and gave a technical overview of the innovative nature of the GBU <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/gb\/products\/arborflow\/\">Arborflow<\/a> SUDs tree pit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-31789\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-04-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-04-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-04-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-04-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-04-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-04-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cambridge-Roadshow-04.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/>Talks concluded, participants were able to go on a guided tour around the <strong>Clay Farm development<\/strong> on the outskirts of the city. Sadly, we discovered that there remain challenges getting highways engineers to fully embrace engineered geocellular systems for integrating tree pits into rain gardens. However, the difficulties of using structural soil are becoming more and more apparent across the UK.
