No, absolutely not!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/resource-centre\/health-benefits-urban-trees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trees improve health<\/a>, create healthy places people want to live, work and play in, manage stormwater runoff, reduce crime \u2013 and most importantly for landowners \u2013 they <strong>significantly increase real estate values<\/strong>, retail footfall and average spend!<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29984\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes those trees are also a critical drainage <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/na\/product-category\/stormwater-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SUDS \/ LID<\/a> feature in their own right.<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that typically, for every <strong>\u00a31 invested in tree planting, at least \u00a36<\/strong> is produced in ecosystem and real estate values. Another study done\u00a0by the U.S. Forest Service found that <strong>every $1 invested\u00a0in trees brings a return of $2.70 in benefits.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Planting a tree is a once in a generation opportunity \u2013 get the below ground design right and the tree, depending on species, could live for 100 years. Get it wrong and you could be replacing in every 8-12 years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Replacing dead trees because VE has removed the critical below ground components is, therefore, a false economy\u00a0as\u00a0<strong>cyclic replacement costs will quickly dwarf the investment cost of doing it right the first time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8075\" style=\"width: 675px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/case-study\/queen-elizabeth-olympic-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29990 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-2-2.jpg 675w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-2-2-600x580.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dean-Image-2-2-300x290.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/case-study\/queen-elizabeth-olympic-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">StrataCell soil cells going in at the iconic Olympic Stadium<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, when a VE exercise is called for to enable a scheme to become commercially viable, look very carefully through a \u2018socially responsible lens\u2019 at what you reduce or remove. We would suggest four areas to consider:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Can trees be relocated into soft landscape areas to reduce cost?<\/li>\n<li>Do you need a <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/na\/product-category\/tree-surrounds\/\">tree grille and guard<\/a> \u2013 these items are critical in some areas, but removal will be unlikely to impact negatively on the health of the tree, unless vandalism is anticipated.<\/li>\n<li>Can expensive large volume structural soil mixes \/ tree sand elements be changed to more cost effective and space efficient soil cells such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/products\/rootspace\/\">RootSpace<\/a> to reduce excavation costs?<\/li>\n<li>Can tree pits in hard surfaces be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/resources\/cad-drawings\/\">linked together<\/a> below ground to reduce required soil volume by 20% per tree?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8076\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/case-study\/wembley-stadium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29993 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Wembley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Wembley.jpg 800w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Wembley-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Wembley-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Wembley-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenblue.com\/case-study\/wembley-stadium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Linked tree pits flourishing in GBU soil cells at Wembley Stadium<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If<a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/na\/product-category\/soil-cells\/\"> soil cells<\/a> are initially specified, beware of considering structural soils like \u2018rock soil mix\u2019 or \u2018compactible tree sand\u2019 as an alternative, because you will need approximately a <strong>multiple of five times the soil cell pit volume<\/strong>\u00a0to provide the tree with the same amount of useable soil\/nutrient\/water!
