It&#8217;s a question that landscape architects, urban planners, arborists, and related professionals from cities large and small have no doubt considered.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-section\">\n<div class=\"blog-post-wrapper cell-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"section post-body\">\n<p>A study being conducted\u00a0by Bartlett Tree Experts, a third party tree research laboratory that performs various tree related studies, is comparing the effects on tree growth of various hardscape\u00a0soil treatments.\u00a0The applications\u00a0in this joint research experiment tested\u00a0two different soil cell products and two different structural soil mixtures in controlled plots, with astounding results.<\/p>\n<h3>Study Methodology<\/h3>\n<p>Tulip poplar trees were planted in two parallel 90 foot trenches, two feet deep and five feet wide, duplicating a city sidewalk. The trench was lined with Typar fabric to restrict root growth from encroaching outside of the intended trench. Wood barriers were constructed at five foot intervals to hold the fabric in place and separate the plots. Each plot contained approximately\u00a042 cubic feet of soil, similar to what might be anticipated\u00a0for a city sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65997 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Soil-below-pavement-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Soil-below-pavement-1.jpg 615w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Soil-below-pavement-1-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greenblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Soil-below-pavement-1-600x410.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Subsurface Treatments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The different treatments included:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Control \u2013 soil mix compacted to 80% Proctor<\/li>\n<li>Compacted Control \u2013 soil mix compacted to\u00a095% Proctor\u00a0to meet current standards for compaction under streets and structures<\/li>\n<li>Silva Cells \u2013 soil mix compacted within the Silva Cell structure<\/li>\n<li>StrataCells \u2013 soil mix compacted within the StrataCell\u00a0structure<\/li>\n<li>Sand Based Structural Soil \u2013 soil mix formula was\u00a0four\u00a0parts medium (concrete) sand, one\u00a0part topsoil loam, and 1.5 parts mature compost &#8211; compacted to 94-96% Proctor (similar to Amsterdam soil)<\/li>\n<li>Gravel Based\u00a0Structural Soil \u2013 soil mix formula\u00a0was 80% #5 stone, 20% soil mix, and .003% hydrogel\u00a0\u2013 compacted to 95% Proctor (defined according to specifications of Cornell University publications for CU Structural Soil)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The plots were filled and compacted as noted above, and trees were planted in July 2014, and repeated six times, three per row, in a randomized pattern. Leaf moisture and chlorophyll fluorescence were also determined. The first year&#8217;s growth indicated the\u00a0startling results indicated in the abbreviated list below.<\/p>\n<p>The results were calculated by measurement of each of the six soil treatments.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Control \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 51 cm (22 inches) height, 18 cm (7 inches) spread<\/li>\n<li>Compacted Control \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 9 cm (\u00a0 3 inches) height, 8 cm (3 inches) spread<\/li>\n<li>Silva Cells \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 85 cm (34 inches) height, 29 cm (30 inches) spread<\/li>\n<li>StrataCells \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a088 cm (36 inches) height, 25 cm (25 inches) spread<\/li>\n<li>Sand Based Structural Soil \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 42 cm (17 inches) height, 18 cm (7 inches) spread<\/li>\n<li>Gravel Based Structural Soil \u00a0 \u00a0 33 cm (13 inches) height, 12 cm (5 inches) spread<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The height and spread diameters\u00a0clearly illustrate that soil cells significantly outperformed all the other methods, with StrataCells showing the most tree growth. The speed at which such drastic\u00a0results have been determined is of great interest to the research, since other studies performed by Bartlett Tree Experts has taken numerous years before significant results started to show.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Thomas Smiley, an Arboricultural Researcher at\u00a0Bartlett,\u00a0directed the research\u00a0which was originally intended to be a five to ten year study. However because of significantly obvious results after just one year, a much faster than expected conclusion has been made and\u00a0the study has been condensed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are seeing large differences in tree growth and health in the <em>Soil Under Pavement<\/em>plot that we installed in\u00a0summer of last year,&#8221; explains\u00a0Dr Smiley. Even before the summary of growth data was completed, Dr Smiley underscored\u00a0that &#8220;the photos tell most of the story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Are Soil Cells?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/product-category\/soil-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Soil cells<\/a> manufactured by GreenBlue and our <a href=\"\/gb?page_id=34676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">affiliate companies<\/a> are the world&#8217;s only large soil cells made from 100% recycled plastic. The weight of the paving and any surface loading is transferred downward through the cell structure to the compacted base at the bottom of the tree\u00a0pit while the soil within the cell structure remains uncompacted to allow for healthy\u00a0tree root establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Utilizing soil cells for <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.greenblue.com\/importance-of-urban-trees-in-stormwater-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tree planting\u00a0also provides a stormwater treatment<\/a> function. Rainwater runoff can enter the system through pervious paving, drains, catch basins, and the opening around the tree trunk.<\/p>\n<p>GreenBlue soil cells\u00a0support paved surfaces of any kind and can meet AASHTO H-20 loading requirements with proper engineered surfaces above. <a href=\"https:\/\/greenblue.com\/product-category\/tree-pit-irrigation-aeration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Irrigation\u00a0and aeration systems<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.greenblue.com\/accommodating-utilities-in-tree-pit-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local utility ducts, can be integrated into the soil cell layout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Since\u00a0this study is ongoing, the final conclusion is undetermined.
