Neue Gymnasium, Bochum

Bochum, a city in Germany’s Ruhr region, lies between the Ruhr and Emscher rivers, both tributaries of the Rhine. It was established by Charlemagne in the 9th century.

The city remained a small settlement until the Industrial Revolution, when the coal and steel industries took off. These industries fuelled the development of the entire region, and by the 1930s, Bochum’s population had grown to more than 300,000.

During World War II, over 80% of Bochum was destroyed, leaving little of its original architecture intact. Many damaged buildings were later repaired, while others were replaced entirely.

When plans were made to construct a new Bochum Regional Court, the existing Gymnasium Ostring (grammar school) had to be relocated. It was decided that the school would merge with the Albert Einstein School, which also required a new site. A completely new building was constructed near the Geological Garden, where the groundbreaking ceremony for the 14,000 m² facility taking place in March 2011. The school was completed in 2013 and was named Neues Gymnasium Bochum.

Unfortunately, more than 100 trees at the site had to be removed to make space for a new car park. To offset this loss, 104 new trees were planted across the school grounds, playground, and parking areas, creating a cohesive green environment that complements the nearby Geological Garden.

To ensure the healthy growth of the newly planted trees in these hard-paved urban conditions, GreenBlue Urban ArborSystems were installed. The StrataCell soil cell system provides a permanently uncompacted soil volume, while a RootDirector guides roots deeper into the ground. ArborVent and RootRain systems support irrigation and aeration of the rooting zone.

ArborGuy below-ground anchors secure the young trees invisibly while allowing natural stem movement, encouraging both root establishment and trunk strengthening. Finally, the paved tree grille withstands the heavy loads of parked vehicles and can be seamlessly integrated into the paving, leaving an opening for the tree trunk.
