Newcastle University dates as far back as 1834, starting with the School of Medicine and Surgery and the Armstrong College was later founded in 1871. The Armstrong Tower building at Newcastle University located on Victoria Road was built and dedicated for Physical Science. The Armstrong Tower building was once the proud owner of the Jubilee Exhibition with over 2 million visitors. A bandstand is the only remnant of the exhibition left today.

Newcastle University decided to invest in increasing their Green Infrastructure at the front of the Armstrong Building in the outdoor Generation seating area. With 13 beautiful thriving trees planned to be installed into the hard paving, GreenBlue Urban were thrilled to work closely alongside Ashlea Landscapes to ensure our ArborSystem Tree Pits (Using the GreenBlue Urban StataCell Soil Cells) were installed throughout. The StrataCell allows the maximum rooting volume within the tree pits, resulting in the trees growing to maturity for all to admire and use for years to come for future generations.

These trees now provide a phenomenal amount of canopy cover and shade during the hot weather and other health benefits to those who use the green space. The soil cells and root management prevent any pavement upheave keeping the area flush and well maintained. During the current era these trees have also been a huge advocate in encouraging social distancing outdoors and providing purified air in the surrounding areas.
