Tree-planting has become the foundation of many environmental campaigns in recent years. The call to plant trees is everywhere, seen as a simple and effective way to help reduce the impact of carbon emissions and restore natural ecosystems.
Managing our urban forests to help them retain, and more importantly increase their carbon storage potential can maximize the ability of trees to mitigate climate change. We must recognize the value of this benefit by providing for our urban tree populations, implementing urban tree planting best practices, and avoiding urban and rural deforestation wherever possible.
As part of our #Greenourplanet campaign, we will continue to look at the mitigation and adaptation measures being taken to prevent and reduce the impacts of climate change being caused globally. With the most anticipated summit on climate change for years, how will countries align to enable a commitment to keeping global temperatures well below pre-industrial times.
In preparation for COP 26 the government has published its Net Zero Strategy – Build Back Better. This strategy sets out policies and proposals for decarbonising all sectors of the UK economy to meet the net-zero target by 2050. We ask is this enough?
The England Trees Action Plan 2021 sets out the government’s long-term vision for the treescape it wants to see in England by 2050 and beyond. In 2021 the government also pledged 44,000 urban trees to be planted as part of the Urban Tree Challenge Fund Across the country 44,000 large trees will be planted in towns and cities. These will support areas to improve health and wellbeing and help connect people to the outdoors.
This is in addition to a cash boost of nearly £4 million to plant hundreds of thousands of trees back in December 2020, £2.5 million of which to support schemes in our towns and cities including along rivers to reduce flood risk and help meet the government’s commitment to increase planting to 30,000 hectares per year across the UK by 2025.
If trees are to play a part in carbon reduction strategies, a lot needs to happen quickly. GreenBlue can help with urban planning to ensure they reach maturity and offer the extent of their benefits.
GreenBlue Urban has long concentrated on UK manufactured products: this forethought means that shipping delays have little effect on our business, as well as reducing the carbon footprint of the business. By manufacturing the range of products from 100% recycled materials, GreenBlue Urban are supporting the circular economy – rather than disposing of end of use plastics in landfill or by incineration, we use this recycled polymer to assist trees to grow and sequester the carbon produced by the manufacture of the original material. We have launched the RootSpace Ocean, manufactured from reclaimed marine waste – further reducing the impact on the environment as well as being SUDS innovators to enable nature-based solutions.
With innovations such as these in place along with 30 years of global distribution – contact us to discover more on:-
