Nestled in the heart of the charming village of Alconbury, their memorial hall stands as a beacon of community and spirit. Whether you are planning a party, hosting a function, organising a regular meeting, or celebrating a special occasion, this community centre offers a place to hold intimate gatherings for up to 300 guests.
The hall’s significance extends beyond its role as a venue. It serves as an emergency refuge for the village, particularly highlighted during the 2020 floods when the hall and surrounding areas were inundated with water. In response, the Alconbury Brook Flood Group, collaborating with various partners, has undertaken innovative measures to prevent future flooding.
Working closely with the Alconbury Parish Council, Silver Fern Agri, Abercore and GreenBlue Urban, the Alconbury Brook Flood Group has successfully installed 22 Hydroplanter units filled with Arborsoil Hydro Max around the memorial hall. These large, drained soakaways are designed to filter water and prevent flooding.
Recent tests with 20mm of rain have shown the effectiveness of these installations, ensuring the car park remains flood-free and accessible. – Alconbury Newsletter May 2024

We are really pleased with this rainwater garden. Previously the village hall was vulnerable to flooding. A few weeks ago we had 25mm of rain and the garden worked superbly. We were able to watch the outflow, and not even a puddle on the carpark. BIG thanks for AW and GBU support.

The success of these projects is a testament to the community’s collective effort. With funding from Anglian Water and the hard work of Silverfern Agri, at least 25 volunteers worked over two weekends on the project. This collaborative effort has transformed the area.
The Green-Blue Rainwater Garden Project is another exciting development on the horizon. With support from the GreenBlue Urban team, further planning and preparations are underway. The project promises to enhance the village’s resilience against flooding and contribute to the overall improvements of the area.
The collaborative efforts to address flooding issues are a brilliant success story of how local groups can work with authorities, councils, and landowners to solve significant problems. As future projects develop, the hall remains a pivotal part of Alconbury’s community life, embodying the spirit of cooperation and forward thinking.
