Delta Hotels, a leading Canadian hotel company, unveiled its multi-million dollar project complete with interior and exterior redevelopment that included the full reconfiguration of the hotel’s public spaces.

Delta Hotels, a leading Canadian hotel company, unveiled its multi-million dollar project complete with interior and exterior redevelopment that included the full reconfiguration of the hotel’s public spaces. “This renovation represents a transformation for the Delta Ottawa City Centre and a sign of things to come for the entire Delta Hotels brand,” says Ken Greene, president and CEO, Delta Hotels.

Prestige Design & Construction performed several aspects of the project including the reconstruction of the streetscapes along Queen Street and Albert Street. This included new concrete sidewalks, architectural pavers, tree planting, and installation of GreenBlue products such as tree grates, tree guards and ArborSystem. The StrataCell supports two rows of city street trees that flank either side of the hotel tower. The Delta Ottawa City Centre is located in a prime downtown location, within walking distance to all major attractions including the Parliament buildings, National museums and the Rideau Canal.

Since the system is flexible, the contractor was able to cut the cells to fit over the pilings making use of all the space and allowing the trees to be planted as intended.

The StrataCells, manufactured from 100% recycled plastic, were assembled to form a skeletal matrix that supported sidewalk and traffic loads. It features almost five times more available growing media compared to the traditional rock/soil method, therefore facilitating healthy root growth. Because of their high structural integrity, the system can be brought immediately adjacent to the curb side, and even beneath the roadway.

Like with any renovation, there were unforeseen obstacles hidden from the contractors during the project. “When excavation began for the StrataCells, the original building piles were uncovered that impeded the intended footprint of the cells by approximately 20%. Since the system is flexible, the contractor was able to cut the cells to fit over the pilings making use of all the space and allowing the trees to be planted as intended,” landscape architect Bryan Jones commented. Enzo Di Chiara of Prestige agreed that this is the biggest issue that they found with the Delta project. They needed to work around the existing buried utilities in the excavation. “The StrataCell modules proved to be easily cut to fit around the hydro duct, thus not slowing down our production,” Enzo says.

“The system was extremely easy to install once the upfront planning and layout was done. The system fits very well for the overall design and application, and will work well with most projects that have buried obstructions in the excavation,” Enzo certified. The contractor continued by saying the StrataCells connected together “like building blocks, and were “lightweight and easy to handle.”

Since project completion, the trees are looking healthy and no issues have been experienced to date. Enzo says he is looking forward to using the StrataCell system for future projects. “This system, in my opinion, is considerably better than other systems that we have used and it simply comes down to the ease of placement for the particular application. Since these types of systems are fairly comparable in pricing, product selection came down to ease of installation that reduced overall cost,” Enzo noted.
