Huddersfield Station Gateway

Huddersfield Station Gateway

Huddersfield station gateway is a bustling transportation hub located in the heart of West Yorkshire. The square serves as a major gateway to the town, providing access to train and bus services, and acts as a vibrant social and commercial space for both residents and visitors.

Before the regeneration project, Huddersfield Station Gateway was an underutilised area, lacking aesthetic appeal and failing to create a positive first impression for visitors. The existing infrastructure was outdated, limited pedestrian access, and the square did not effectively integrate with the surrounding urban fabric.

The primary objectives of the regeneration project, designed by Kirklees Metropolitan Council were to improve the area’s functionality, create a sense of place, foster economic growth, and attract investment, providing a safe and inclusive environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

Kirklees Metropolitan Council demonstrated its commitment to sustainable urban development and green infrastructure by adopting best practices in urban tree planting, by implementing the GreenBlue Urban Arborsystem products this project is guaranteed long-term success. The Arborsystem provides a comprehensive fully equipped solution for tree planting, including engineered soil cell solutions, root management, and sustainable irrigation techniques. By prioritising the health and longevity of urban trees, we have created a greener and more attractive landscape and contributed to improved air quality, biodiversity and overall well-being.

Recognising the importance of underground space for both the health of the trees and the functionality of urban infrastructure, the council specified the Rootspace Soil Cell due to its capabilities of weaving around utilities such as pipes and cables. The interconnected underground network of access to the soil will enable the trees to thrive and flourish whilst communicating with each other’s roots.
