Rugby Moto Services

Rugby Moto Services

Moto Rugby Services, located on the M6 in Warwickshire and described as Britain’s greenest motorway service station, is poised to celebrate its fourth anniversary in April.

The state-of-the-art facilities are a result of a £40 million investment that created 120 jobs in the West Midlands during its construction, as Moto focused on a strategic expansion of their motorway service area portfolio.

The site, which boasts being Moto’s most environmentally-friendly on the network, has a number of sustainable landscape-based initiatives, including SuDS, trees, swales, bioretention planters, and a biomass energy boiler. The building’s thoughtful design features overhangs for shade and windows – with glass specially designed to avoid overheating in the summer – which maximise natural daylight and minimise the need for artificial lighting.

When it first opened, Moto Rugby also became the largest ultra-rapid charging site on the motorway network, offering 24 ultra-rapid chargers on-site. It is clear that the site’s key focus was to incorporate advanced green infrastructure to enhance the environmental sustainability and aesthetic appeal of the service area.

Illman Young Landscape, specialists in sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) landscaping, designed the scheme with multiple rain gardens and SuDS to manage surface water effectively. 11 urban trees were planted, designed to thrive with advanced support systems. GreenBlue Urban supported Lowther Forestry Group with the following products:

Detailed Design and Implementation

Sustainability was a key consideration in the design and development of Moto Rugby Services, with landscaping playing a significant role in achieving the site’s environmental objectives.

With Illman-young at the forefront, planning and environmental considerations were made to overcome site restrictions to maintain functionality and enhance user experience. The fully integrated SuDS schemes were designed to capture, treat, and attenuate all surface water on site, creating attractive and functional landscape features. With regards to surrounding agriculture, reed beds, natural plants, and specific types of gravel were also utilised to filter water and mitigate ground pollution.

Following successful planning, detailed designs were implemented to create robust, high-quality, and durable schemes that aligned with the client’s vision and visitor expectations. Collaboration with Rugby Borough Council, Vinci Construction, Lowther Forestry Group, and GreenBlue Urban ensured the projects met all regulatory and environmental standards.
