Tindal Square, Chelmsford

Chelmsford City Council and Essex County Council joined forces to create an inviting public space in Tindal Square. The project aimed to revamp Tindal Square into a pedestrian-friendly area while ensuring a seamless east-west cycle link, despite the initial barrier of a road separating it from the high street.

This initiative, part of the Chelmsford City Growth Package, aims to eliminate traffic, providing substantial advantages to residents, visitors, and the local economy.

The project was financed by developer contributions from Chelmsford City Council and the new South East Local Enterprise Partnership through the Government’s Getting Building Fund.

“I’m so proud to see the brilliant end result of this partnership project with Essex County Council, which celebrates the civic heart of Chelmsford. The investment has revitalised the head of the High Street and created a new focal point for one of Chelmsford’s most iconic buildings – Shire Hall. “I’m delighted that the city’s residents and visitors alike will be able to meet up, relax in and appreciate this attractive, safe, and inclusive new space.”

The project was funded by developer contributions collected by Chelmsford City Council and the new Southeast Local Enterprise Partnership through the government’s Getting Building Fund. The new design, by landscape architects Jacobs, includes flexible space for future events and temporary staging at the head of the high street.

Key features of the project include:

– A pedestrian-priority public space with clear signage and symbols for the safety of all users.

– Maintaining a continuous cycle link through designated gateway points.

– Tree planting to create a green, welcoming environment.

GreenBlue Urban supported Milestone Infrastructure on the highways for this scheme. The exciting design was one layer deep around the perimeter, utilizing our flexibility with the various depths of RootSpace to achieve the best possible results on site.

The Main and sub installers Dyer & Butler faced challenges such as utilities and uniquely shaped tree pits. GreenBlue Urban provided a product demonstration and installed Rootspace G2 600mm tree pits with essential criteria such as aeration, irrigation, and dead man anchor plates for the trees’ stability. A Settstone precast grille and Ullswater tree guard were also installed to provide a high-quality finish.

This transformation has significantly improved the footfall and seating areas, making the square more welcoming and greener for all. The before-and-after photographs speak volumes about the positive changes implemented.
