Waste Transfer Station, Cardiff

Waste Transfer Station, Cardiff

The Vale of Glamorgan Council, committed to promoting sustainability and responsible waste management practices, initiated a source-separated recycling collection service for its residents in 2019. Beginning with the collection of mixed recycling, the Council set its sights on transitioning towards a system that prioritised higher quality and higher value recycling materials. To support this ambition the Council identified the need for a cutting-edge sorting and bulking facility to streamline the processing system.

A significant challenge encountered during this project was the limited space available between the building and the site boundary. To address this constraint, a space-saving design approach was adopted by Stantec Cambridge, incorporating GreenBlue’s  Hydroplanter starter modules and end modules and just short of 100 continuation modules. This innovative design ensured maximum use of the available space without compromising functionality, Installed in November 2022. The Hydroplanter modules, 100% recycled and stamped with the ‘Made in Britain’ approval were utilised to efficiently manage the water runoff, supported by the network of downpipes and overflow pipes, enduring drainage, and mitigating the environmental impact.

“The development of sustainable infrastructure and the effective management of resources go hand in hand.”

The successful implementation of the sorting and bulking facility was made possible through collaborative efforts involving various stakeholders. The Vale of Glamorgan Council provided valuable support and guidance throughout the project, while landscape architects from Stantec Cambridge contributed their expertise in designing environmentally conscious solutions. The Main Contractor Knights brown, based in Bridgend, along with the sub-contractor Burdens, both played pivotal roles in the construction and execution of the project, ensuring adherence to quality standards and timely completion. GreenBlue Urban’s Key Account Manager, Karlos Woodcock was on hand on-site during installation offering guidance and support throughout- a service we offer to all installers using our products.
