Lansdowne Public Realm Bournemouth

Lansdowne Public Realm Bournemouth

The Lansdowne district in Bournemouth, has undergone a remarkable transformation with a £4 million investment aimed at realising the council’s long-term vision for the area.

As part of its long-term vision to rejuvenate the Lansdowne area, making it more attractive, accessible, and sustainable the project aimed to create a vibrant and welcoming urban environment while improving the quality of life for residents, workers, and visitors.

Holdenhurst Road was the chosen location for 5 urban trees whereby GreenBlue Urban supported with their ArborSystem products.  However, one of the most significant challenges faced during the project was the presence of underground services running through the chosen area, potentially restricting the available space available without risk to the surrounding infrastructure.

The concern, as always is the need to access and maintain utilities, which traditional tree planting methods might have hindered access or necessitated costly relocation of services.

To overcome these challenges and enable successful tree planting, GreenBlue Urban’s RootSpace structural soil solution was used. RootSpace is an innovative urban tree planting system that integrates a specially designed structural soil support to enable healthy tree growth while protecting underground utilities.   Designed to provide adequate healthy, aerated soil and minimise soil compaction, and with easy access maintenance and repairs can be carried out without causing harm to the planted trees.

As a leader in urban tree design and implementation , GreenBlue Urban played a pivotal role by providing innovative solutions tailored to Lansdowne’s specific needs.  Supporting with the installation, Chaffin Works enabled the RootSpace 1000 (2 Cells Deep): for healthy tree growth and longevity.  The use of RootRain Arborvents and Precincts provided efficient aeration and irrigation, ensuring trees received adequate moisture and nutrients, even with limited rainfall. Dead man ArborGuy Guying and Root Directors helped anchor tree roots and prevent damage to surrounding infrastructure while promoting healthy root development.

The planting of trees and green spaces has significantly improved the visual appeal of Lansdowne, creating a more inviting and attractive urban environment.  The newly planted trees contribute to better air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, enhancing the overall health and well-being of the community.  Trees offer natural shade, helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect and creating a more comfortable climate for users.

Lansdowne has become more pedestrian-friendly, with improved accessibility features providing residents and visitors with welcoming green spaces, promoting community engagement and well-being, boosting local economic activity and property values.

The Lansdowne public realm transformation, supported by GreenBlue Urban’s innovative urban tree planting solutions, has successfully realised the council’s long-term vision for the area. This £4 million investment has not only improved the physical landscape but has also created a more sustainable, appealing, and vibrant urban environment. It serves as a testament to the positive impact that strategic urban planning and innovative urban tree management can have on a community’s quality of life and well-being.
