Paseo de la Plaza Mayor de Sabadell

Paseo de la Plaza Mayor de Sabadell

The Paseo de la Plaza Mayor of Sabadell is the backbone of the historic center of the city from north to south, serving as a meeting point for residents and visitors of this important municipality in the province of Barcelona, about 30 kilometers from the capital.

Sabadell is synonymous with industrial development, with periods of great splendor during the second half of the nineteenth century and its outstanding textile industry. It was during this period when notable financial, business and cultural institutions were created, lending prestige to the city. Some of Sabadell’s most important buildings, such as the church of Sant Félix de Sabadell (15th century), the offices of Banco Sabadell (1954) and the town hall itself, are located in the surroundings of the Plaza Mayor promenade.

The Sabadell City Council drew up the new design of the promenade, with the landscape architect Anna Terricabras and the tree expert Josep Selga as collaborators in the areas of gardening and trees. The project sought to restore the natural environment, making it pleasant and healthier for people through the integration of greenery in this important meeting point and transportation hub of the city.

The project presented certain challenges that needed to be addressed. One of the most important was the integration of vegetation in a complex location, which included the passage of vehicles in some areas and a metro station. This would require a solution to guarantee the adequate growth of the trees and their coexistence with the adjacent infrastructure.

The solution selected was GreenBlue Urban’s RootSpace600 soil cell. RootSpace is a pavement support system made from 100% recycled high-strength plastic. The RootSpace parts are modular and connect to one another, creating structures under the soil that, when filled with the optimal amount of soil for trees, keep the soil uncompacted, providing the best conditions for the trees to grow successfully. At the same time, their load-bearing capacity offers all the guarantees of resistance to the needs of urban environments. In this project, around 140 m2 of RootSpace cells were installed along the entire length of the promenade.

RootSpace offers significant benefits for urban soil, as it allows the soil to remain healthy, providing moisture, air and nutrients necessary for tree growth. In addition, its ability to manage runoff will help cool the surrounding environment, thus reducing the heat island effect.

Up to 43 trees of different species were planted in this renovated promenade. The chosen species were Acer campestre, Acer buergerianum, Koelreuteria paniculata and Lagerstroemia indica, whose colors and textures will provide a unique image to the square throughout the different seasons of the year.

The Paseo de la Plaza Mayor in Sabadell is now an example of urban renewal, which carefully and intelligently integrates the best planting standards in a complex space, according to the demanding needs and challenges presented by the cities of the future.

From GreenBlue Urban and Internaco Green Space, official distributor in Spain, we applaud all of the teams involved in the project, and greatly appreciate the trust placed in us.
